چکیده

[1] Interaction of convection and circulation is key to the Asian summer monsoon, but difficult to represent in global models. Here we report results from simulations for the summer of 2004 by a global cloud-system-resolving model, NICAM. At both 14and 7-km horizontal resolution, NICAM simulates the observed monsoon circulation patterns, and the northward propagation of precipitation. The 7-km run simulates summer-mean precipitation maxima in narrow bands along the western Ghats, Himalayan foothills, the Arakan Yoma highlands, and the Annamite range. Precipitation 1) is modulated by orography, 2) is affected by synoptic-scale systems, and 3) displays a pronounced diurnal cycle, especially over Indo-China, with its strong/weak signal propagating westward/eastward in the wet/dry phase of the intraseasonal oscillation. This set of simulations captures these intraseasonal changes of the Indian monsoon with high fidelity from June to early July. NICAM exhibits a positive bias in precipitation over the Indian Ocean, common to atmospheric models with prescribed sea surface temperature. This calls for the inclusion of ocean-atmosphere coupling process to improve monsoon simulation skills. Citation: Oouchi, K., A. T. Noda, M. Satoh, B. Wang, S.-P. Xie, H. G. Takahashi, and T. Improved tropical modes of variability in the NCEP Climate Forecast

A new stochastic multi-cloud model (SMCM) convective parametrization, which mimics the interactions at sub-grid scales of multiple cloud types, is incorporated into the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Climate Forecast System version 2 (CFSv2) model (referred to as CFSsmcm hereafter) in lieu of the pre-existing simplified Arakawa-Schubert (SAS) cumulus scheme. A detailed ana...

Seasonal modulation of the Asian summer monsoon between the Medieval Warm Period and Little Ice Age: a multi model study

Instrumental and proxy records indicate remarkable global climate variability over the last millennium, influenced by solar irradiance, Earth’s orbital parameters, volcanic eruptions and human activities. Numerical model simulations and proxy data suggest an enhanced Asian summer monsoon during the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) compared to the Little Ice Age (LIA). Using multiple climate model sim...

Premonsoon aerosol characterization and radiative effects over the IndoGangetic Plains: Implications for regional climate warming

[1] The Himalayas have a profound effect on the South Asian climate and the regional hydrological cycle, as it forms a barrier for the strong monsoon winds and serves as an elevated heat source, thus controlling the onset and distribution of precipitation during the Indian summer monsoon. Recent studies have suggested that radiative heating by absorbing aerosols, such as dust and black carbon o...

PCMDI Report No. 53 PREDICTABILITY AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SUBSEASONAL AND INTERANNUAL VARIABILITY DURING THE ASIAN SUMMER MONSOON

The relationship between subseasonal and interannual variability of the Asian Summer Monsoon has been investigated through analysis of the dominant modes of variability in the 40-year NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis, with complementary satellite and surface based precipitation data. The hypothesis that the characteristics of monsoon subseasonal variability (i.e. weather regimes) are modulated on interannu...

Review of Advance in Research on Asian Summer Monsoon

The Asian monsoon is the most significant component of the global climate system. During recent two decades, concerned efforts have been made to investigate the Asian monsoon. A substantial achievement has been made in basic physical processes, predictability and prediction since the MONEX of 1978-79. The major advance in our understanding about of the variability of the Asian summer monsoon ha...
